It is with immense sadness that I post this. The loss of our beautiful Starling named Chicken Wing. Chick was my first ever bird, and I raised her from the time she was 6 maybe 7 days old. Chicken saw me as one of her own, and seemed to fancy herself part human, part cat, part bird, and 100% a K-pop idol. I became her mom on Mother’s Day 2019.

Chick enjoyed energetic music, and loved singing along to BTS, Park Bom, music from the games Arcaea and guilty gear.

Chick could mimic a few things: her name as “Chick” “Chicky” “Chicken” and “Chicken Wing”, my voice saying “come here!”, the whistling from the BTS song DNA, and kissy noises on the way both I and my boyfriend do them. She had chirps that were more bossy and bratty when she wanted attention, and baby chirps for when she wanted hand fed or to chill out on my shoulder.

She had her own special bedtime song that I sang to her every night before she was put in her cage for bed.

Her last day was wonderful. Normal even! She sang, enjoyed a few baths, fluttered dramatically in a store bag (one of the few things she liked as a toy), went outside to enjoy sunshine with me, and seemed like she was as good as usual.

And then while we slept, she passed in her sleep. I woke the next morning to do my usual routine and came upon the crushing discovery when it was food, water, and music time for her as I was getting my youngest ready for school.

I didn’t get to say goodbye. Did she know I love her? Her bedtime song says it, but did she KNOW?

The last 5 months have been soul crushing. We’ve lost now 3 pets and had another end up in the emergency animal hospital. Saying goodbye is heart breaking, a sudden unexpected loss is heart crushing.

It’s been a few days, and I feel like I’m not recovering enough this time.

I miss you Chick Chicky Chicken! Your silly way of singing and chirping, making up lyrics about you as K-pop played, the way you snuggled up against me, and baby chirped, the way you napped in my hand or up against my neck.

You really were the sweetest little starling.

I’m trying to make sure we have device free time before she goes to bed each night. So we either craft, or chitchat before she gets ready for bed.
