The following review is written by Kat. Yep, my 11 (almost 12) year old. I figure who better to review a book for young adults than someone in that age range? This is her first ever written review too! Yay Kitten! <3 ______
The title of the book I read is Some Rivers End on the Day of the Dead, written by Eileen Granfors. It is about a 14-year-old Mexican girl named Marisol whose father was murdered while reporting about the Mexican Drug Wars. Because of this, Marisol, her mother, and her uncle Tomaso are forced to move to America to stay safe.
I really like this book, it has everything i like in it: Comedy, adventure, mysteries, and family. And it’s a really long book, which is another thing I really love. I should note that there are some scary parts, like when Marisol is separated from her family in a large fire, but other than that, it’s a great book.
One part I really liked was when Marisol was with her friend at lunch when some kids started a food fight, and a teacher got everyone in trouble, but then Marisol’s favorite teacher, who saw the whole thing and knew that they did nothing, came and saved her and her friend! I wish all teachers were like that. Another part I enjoyed was when Marisol reunited with her family. I was so happy for her!
I would recommend this for people my age, unless you dislike comedy, or adventure, or mysteries. Or long books. And it’s great if you want to know more about
Mexican culture, because it teaches you about the Mexican holiday El Dia de Los Muertos, or The Day of the Dead. It also teaches a little bit of spanish, like the phrase
“No todo lo que brilla es oro”, Not everything shiny is gold, or Abuela, the word for grandma.
That’s all for my review of the book Some Rivers End on the Day of the Dead, by Eileen Granfors!
