As you all know I am very interested in Asian cultures, history, civilization, art, and languages. Of course, that is why the history course I took in college was East Asian History and Civilization.
So it’s not really a big surprise that I was excited to learn about the book Oriental Rugs: An Illustrated Lexicon of Motifs, Materials, and Origins! This book boasts over 1000 pictures and drawings of rugs from all over. Places like Morocco, Turkey, Persia, Central Asia, Afghanistan, India and China.
This book talks about the traditions of the rugs, textile terms, the hand knotting and hand weaving traditions passed on through generations to make these beautiful pieces of art.
The pictures and illustrations even show you the processes in creating these rugs that are talked about. Truly a book full of knowledge for those interested in the stories, histories and making of rugs that are so beautiful and unique.
Many of these rugs have stories and specific meanings behind their lovely designs, and this is a way to finally know what you’re looking at and what it means. Since I love art, design and oriental cultures this book is going to make a great addition to my book collection. I still have all my books from my history class (and I do enjoy reading them not just for homework assignments anymore!) so why not add in something more specific to something I am interested in?
I also think this book will be a great inspiration to me, I can figure out what kind of rug designs would look pretty here in my house and actually buy a rug or two. I’ve never actually bought a rug that wasn’t just a kids rug. But just looking through the preview of this book has me excited about the possibility of beautifully designed oriental rugs at the very least brightening up the living room and making the dull boring brown carpet hidden at least somewhat.
