This year is the first time we did Gingerbread houses where I had all the kids just do their own houses.
Kat still hasn’t done hers, so I don’t have that to show. It’s sitting there waiting. Phbbbt!
First, I started with four house kits, these ones in particular.
I like this brand because of their price point and quality. Thankfully this year they made a change to their overall kit! Yes!!
See this below? It’s a frosting bag with a plastic tip that makes it easier to actually use the darn icing! FINALLY!! Before you had to cut a corner and hope for the best. Now a plastic tip with a cap makes everything so much easier. I can actually better control what’s going on!
The kit also had some yellow fondant, but we don’t even have a single rolling pin in the house. So.. we didn’t touch the fondant. >.> We just ended up throwing it away, I’ve never actually tasted fondant either. I’m not sure how it would taste, but I wasn’t in the mood to find out! I was making four gingerbread houses while a Japanese Cheesecake was in the oven!
Thanks to the new frosting/icing bag, I was finally able to get the houses up and together with only some issues. But they actually ALL held together! Usually I can’t keep them situated very well thanks to lack of frosting control. They’re a total mess!!
As anyone with kittens or cats will tell you, they tend to be very… ahh… helpful creatures. Squeakers and Midnight were insisting on helping me build the houses for the kids to decorate.
See, squeaks is very insistent that he is the absolute best kitten for the job of helping mom with gingerbread houses!!
This beautiful house was made by none other than Sisi. How pretty is that? You know, I’ve never actually decorated a gingerbread house. Not on my own anyway, I’ve helped a teeny bit here and there with the kiddos, but that’s it!
So pretty and as she attempted, so symmetrical!
This is actually Lisi’s house, both sides of it… for some reason I never did get a picture of the
I think the house still stands, so I will have to get a decent picture shown!front of it! D: Bad mommy.
Above is Var’s house, he also attempted the symmetrical look. Then promptly wanted to eat the candies off the house. I at least held him off for the most part so I could take a picture!
Once I get Kat to decorate her house I will show it in a post of it’s own.

*sigh* my kids are too old and “too cool” for gingerbread houses this year, so I could live vicariously through yours. I was intrigued by the japanese cheesecake though, so I am headed over to that link to take a look! Loved how your houses turned out too (and you were right on the fondant, you didn’t miss anything!)

Good to know the fondant wasn’t too important! It was just yellow anyway, seemed strange of a color to me for a gingerbread house! 😉

I love making gingerbread houses and the kits are so much better! I have tried for years to bake my own, but my lines are always terrible.

Oh, your houses came out darling! lol…I know how hard it is to keep the kids at bay when they are decorating! Candies get picked off and swallowed up faster than they put them on the houses!

Your kids did a great job! I cringe in store when I see the kits and pray my son doesn’t see them. We did it together when he was three and it just constantly fell apart. We were both so frustrated with it! We have never made another one together since then lol

They fall apart so dang easily! I did the building and waiting very slowly in hopes that they’d hold up. They’re still up today and we did them Dec 15.
We do these every year, usually the kids did one together but I like letting them have their own control for once.

Great Gingerbread house! That is one thing we didn’t get around to this holiday season! It flew by way too fast!! I love making them but always have a hard time building them. They usually collapse! lol

Boo and I didn’t get to one this year because I was so wrapped up in the blog. I need to make it a priority next year.
It’s very nice they put a frosting tip on that bag! I’ve had nothing but messes, too, from crazy frosting.
Your cats are adorable.

These look great! I remember the first – and only – time I made a gingerbread house it kept falling apart and looked awful.

The house looks amazing! I’ve actually never done a gingerbread house but with a ready product like that I might even try it out.
I know cats can be very helpful, mine are too. They are just really curious about everything that is happening. But such sweet joy to everyone.

I love gingerbread houses, building one is the perfect activity for winter and sadly I didn’t get to make one this year with being sick; I hope I can make a massive one next year! Your gingerbread house looks great.

We always do the gingerbread houses and love them! My youngest was reluctant this year to put any sweeties on there and wanted to eat them all instead :/ Your houses are so beautiful, I’m very impressed!

Aww, how I miss doing this! We almost forgot about this since we always tend to go on vacation during the holiday. Your Ginger house looks adorable though 🙂

I love your post! My only regret this year is that I did not build a house with my daughters. They are still a bit young but we should have given it a shot anyway. What a great Christmas memory for you and yours. Well done!

Oh wow. Everything now comes in an “instant” kit. No more slaving in the kitchen, no more hot ovens. This would be a nice bonding activity with the kids, but I guess nothing beats the good old way of making gingerbread houses. Thank you for sharing! 🙂

OMG haven’t seen one of these gingerbread houses since a child, I loved eating them as a kid, lol. A friend of mine knew how to do them, but not from a kit, somehow she made them from scratch. I wish I paid more attention to her back in the day to see what exactly she did. Yours are short of phenomenal!
Elizabeth Copeland says
My children love doing an annual gingerbread house. Ours never looks as pretty as yours does, but we do the kits, and I let them eat it when they are done. Tasty!
