As someone who loves animals, and as someone who has multiple cats in their home, odor control is a very important part of keeping everyone happy.
Thankfully, the options for odor control cat litter are numerous!
Cats don’t want stinky litter boxes any more than you want to smell them. We don’t want to be one of those houses where people are gagging going in, like you’d see on one of those animal hoarder shows. Sometimes though, scooping often is not enough to combat the problem.

This is the point where your cat’s litter can help. But.. how do you even find the best odor control cat litter?
Well, it takes a bit of trial and error really. You have to find a scented litter that both you, and your cat(s) can handle. As well as handle any possible allergies anyone might have to said scents. It can be a bit of a battle at times, so I wouldn’t recommend stocking up on a ton of odor control cat litter until you find one that works for you and your feline family members.
It’s also a matter of making sure you have enough cat boxes that your cats aren’t spraying, or even just going bathroom, outside of their boxes. The general rule for how many cat boxes to have, is one for each cat, plus one extra box. We have eight cats, and right now are operating on 7 boxes, but before we had just three, which was fine for a little bit… until suddenly it wasn’t anymore. So we purchased four additional cat boxes to help reduce litter box smells and stress, and this has thankfully worked out very well.
On top of making sure you have a cat littler that works for your humans as well as your cats is important. So is keeping your litter box(es) cleaned properly. They should be washed once every other week if your using a clumping litter. Though I’ll be honest and we don’t always get around to this part. Yikes! We need to step up our game on that one.
Thankfully, there are a lot of resources out there to get opinions on various cat litters before you try them out. Just remember to take your cats sensitivities into mind, as some scented litters can overwhelm your cat. There are also some unscented litter options if you or your kitty loves don’t take well to scented odor control cat litter.
Our four newest cat litter boxes are covered ones, but with the doors taken off since the cats didn’t like them.
We don’t have blue on the bottom of ours, but you get the idea anyway. They all have a filter on top that also help with filtering out some of the smell. Though some makes it through every now and again since we had to take off the doors. Usually, it’s all perfectly well enough contained.
We also make sure we scoop all the boxes daily, or at least as close to daily as we can remember as sometimes we get busy and forget. Thankfully, once kids are old enough to start school, they’re old enough to help with scooping cat boxes! 😉 So it’s not all on you mom, and remember to have someone else do the litter if you’re pregnant!
