Var is, as you all know, my wild child. With ODD and the lower maturity that a little boy has compared to a little girl (or at least him compared to any little girl I’ve been around… and many boys I know..), he can be a very difficult person to handle at times.
I will of course like to say that he is much improved than he was 4 years ago, heck even a year ago!
Still… He can … cause a lot of stress. More so when it comes to being around men. He seems to decide that he’s the boss of everyone and everything, and no other man in the world is as important as his law. He doesn’t outright say it, but the significant troubles he has listening to anyone … and the way guys seem to react to him… just causes so much chaos.
We have rules here that apply to all children, but my Var thinks he’s sneaky enough to get away with breaking them.
1.) You can’t play anything after bed time, if it’s a school night bed time is bedtime. You can read a book, you can doodle, or something low key if you cannot sleep. 3DS, Computer, Tablet are OFF LIMITS. If you’re caught with these after bedtime on a school night, you’re not playing them the same day.
2.) If you get a failing grade on something due to laziness (and not because you honestly didn’t understand the work) you will lose computer/tablet/3ds privileges. For an entire day. If you bring home something with a D on it and we look over it together and it’s clear you knew the answers but ‘just didn’t want to do it’ you’ve lost something for the day. That day only of course. But if you bring home four bad papers then you’ve lost all three that day, plus one of them the next day. Really, I only had to enact this rule because Var was letting his grades fall. He was bored, and didn’t want to do anything. It’s the same reason he’s not in the advanced program at school… he was too lazy to get the work done and be allowed in again this year.
He knows these rules, so… why does he like to try and get away with doing things that are going to cause him to lose the things he absolutely loves? (Minecraft on the pc, minecraft on tablet, and anything on 3DS that he has…?!)
How do you handle the “But I did nothing wrong!!” protests when you punish someone for doing something that is against a rule that hasn’t changed and isn’t likely to change?
