With five kids and not always a lot of time to spare, the downtime I do have is often used not eating the best I could.
Every other weekend we are down to just one kiddo for the weekend as the oldest three go to Ex-h’s house for a visit and Lisi goes to have a weekend with Max. It’s hard to go from having to cook for everyone to cooking for just the two of us. We both grew up with bigger families so cooking for two wasn’t something we even grew up doing.
You know what this meant right? Far too many times eating at the same fast food place over and over again. I was getting sick of it! I was so excited when I found out about Plated!
Plated offers 7 chef-designed recipes every week. There are 4 meat and fish options and three vegetarian dishes. After you put your zip code in and select the delivery date you can pick which food you want to have the ingredients sent to you for. I was actually pretty surprised that they delivered to our little part of Northern Idaho, but there it was… 7 options staring me down!
This was a chance for us to try and make a meal for just the two of us and no one else. We did order enough for four plates, only because we wanted left overs… and because someone wanted a double portion. 😉 We ended up picking Beef Bibimbap, which is a Korean dish.
Since we both like Asian foods, though we tend to usually do Japanese or Chinese foods, we figured this would be the best bet for us. We weren’t sure because we’d never tried it before, Korean food I mean, but what better time than our alone time to try something new and enjoy cooking without the rush of hungry kids on a school night to stress us out?
Our package arrived with everything well sealed and kept cold with ice packs. The only thing we needed to provide was pepper, salt, eggs, and of course cooking utensils.
Rice was also included, but by the time I took the picture of the rest of the ingredients it was already in my rice cooker. Because, well, why use a pot cooking method when a rice cooker works so much better (for me? ) and I have one? 😉
I often make dinner for everyone, but doing something for ourselves like this was extremely satisfying. We worked together to get everything done and were surprised at the dish. Even I didn’t overly mind the cucumber, which is raw, sliced thin, and sprinkled with salt. Though I admit I would have liked it better cooked, and we both agreed that we’ll cook our bean sprouts next time, though they certainly aren’t bad raw!
I look forward to having more experiences in the kitchen now on the weekends when it is just Risi, Aussie and I. With ideas from Plated I know we can do more than just grab cheap burgers or eat far too many calories worth of food at IHOP or Denny’s!
Have you heard of Plated before? If you sign up you can see what kind of wonderful dishes their chef’s are offering and try something you’ve never tried before! Even if you don’t think you can cook, or things are intimidating, the instructions that come with your ingredients include pictures and are a great guide to get you to having a wonderful meal that you’ve created. Plus you can get up to $30 off your first meal if you sign up today!

It really is a good idea. It is definitely hard to cook for 2. Any time half my family is gone I instantly write that off as a NO COOK NITE!

Looks yummy and something fun to do with the kids.

Oh it would be if you had older kids or kids that love to help with all the little tasks, that’s true!

I tried a similar service and really liked it! It’s nice having the ingredients and spices proportioned just right. You don’t have to worry about buying an entire jar of spices you may only use once or twice.

That’s very true! This made everything so easy and it really was lovely to cook together and then plop down on the couch to enjoy something we made together like this. No one saying that they didn’t like or don’t like such and such ingredient. The perfect evening for us for sure!

This looks really good! I know of some one adopted from Korea and is now trying to explore her culture. This is one of the first things she learned to make. I want to make it for my own family, too.
