First birthdays have got to be so far my favorite birthday’s to celebrate with kids. They may never remember them at all, but I can remember. I just wish I had pictures of all the 1st birthday’s aside from Lisi’s! I had some from Kat and Sisi… but they got lost along the way, I swore I had some from Var but maybe they’re hidden in a zip file I just haven’t opened in years. As you can tell, my pictures are horridly organized and I need to spend a few hours/days getting it all put together so it doesn’t suck.
Anyway! Better Crocker knows that more and more parents are making smash cakes for their kids. You know, the first cake the kiddo gets and they get it all to themselves to completely destroy and eat to their liking?
I remember that Kat hardly touched hers, just sort of picked at it really before taking a few timid bites. Years later she’s still not the biggest fan of cakes, particularly the icing on them. Hmm. I remember that her smash cake was free when I bought the actual party cake from a grocery store.
Sis and Var both had homemade smash cakes, and Lisi did too. Thankfully I have Lisi’s pictures. Even if the cake sorta sucked because I worked last minute… yikes!
Betty Crocker has provided this cute little infographic on how to make this 1 shaped smash cake for your little one!
Of course you can also find their recipes for their favorite 1st birthday smash cakes by going click right here.
Lisi’s smash cake when she turned one (I can’t believe it, she’s almost 7 1/2 now!!), was chocolate with whipped cream frosting.
She wasn’t really sure what to do about it at first, she kind of touched it, but wasn’t sure about the texture of the frosting. Whipped cream frosting is actually my favorite, even if it’s temperamental and difficult to work with.
Then my dad stepped in and showed her what to do, ohhh.. that made all the difference in the world! Having Grandpa give you a hand and letting you taste the chocolate cake? She went crazy after that! You see the little hand coming from the front of the highchair there? That’s Var! Hah, he REALLY wanted to taste the frosting. 😉
The following picture is the aftermath of Lisi’s smash cake. She ended up not even getting overly too much on herself, though I do remember a bit being in her beautiful red hair. 😉Betty Crocker’s adorable cakes are going to make it difficult for me to pick what I am going to do for Risi’s cake next year. When she turns one! Thankfully I have time to think about it! I love the Confetti Cake Stack and the Watercolor Cakes personally, but we’ll see how things go to see what I end up doing hmm? 😉 I suppose you’ll all know in a little over a year anyway!
Do you remember your kids’ first birthdays or are you looking forward to them? What do you do for first birthdays, anything special? Smash cake or no?

i had some awesome pics of one of my friends babies first birthday party including a smash cake but this was so long ago that I backed them up on a cd and deleted them from my compact flash card. Guess what is so scratched you can’t get anything off of it? 🙁
thankfully I am more obsessive now with putting them on FB/FLICKR/Computer/harddrive etc now lol
Smashcakes weren’t a thing when I was growin up though as far as I can remember lol
