Earlier today I asked on my Facebook a question about spelling words for 3rd graders.
I asked what other 3rd graders had for their spelling words this week. I didn’t really get a response from anyone with a 3rd grader who could/would tell me what their spelling words were this week.
This is Var’s first week having spelling words for the 3rd grade (this is only the 4th week of school, they waited a little bit since the school is still in construction and so many things were chaos the first two week!) and I see that his class has 3 total spelling word lists.
I assume that the ‘normal’ is the orange, the ‘harder’ would be the green, and the ‘hardest’ would be the purple word list. Considering the words contained and their positions on the page. I’ll post the word lists so you can see what I mean.
The Orange Words:
- Blue
- Phone
- Threw
- Dude
- Juice
- Huge
- Toast
- Spoke
- Loaf
- Stone
- Grey
- Drove
- Cruise
- Croak
- Quote
The Green Words:
- Chosen
- Rumor
- Robot
- Rescue
- Moment
- Program
- Human
- Stolen
- Music
- Local
- Hoping
- Elbow
- Duty
- Costume
- Solar
The Purple Words:
- Compose
- Expose
- Exposition
- Misconstruction
- Induction
- Harmonious
- Production
- Harmony
- Induce
- Reduction
- Reduce
- Produce
- Deduce
- Composition
- Misconstrue
Var is actually working on the purple words list, and I was surprised to see words like this for a 3rd grader! Wow!
Then again English has always been a rough language on me and spelling was never really my strong point. I’ve gotten so much better thanks to spell checkers and learning from my mistakes when I correct things I missed. Still, I know there is no way I could have done this purple word list when I was his age!

My kids are not in 3rd grade but I am nervous by the time they get there. I feel like school is getting tougher and tougher for them. Let’s hope for the best.

If memory serves, these look about like the one’s both my niece and stepson had when they were in 3rd grade. Spelling was always one of my favorite subjects in school.

Never underestimate the ability of kids. I was reading and writing some pretty big words at that age. Should all kids be expected to spell words that big at that age. Of course, not! But some kids are definitely ready.

I don’t have a third grader, so can’t answer that question, but some kids have an affinity for spelling and reading. My favorite author in elementary school was Charles Dickens. I read Shakespeare, Dumas, and Dostoevsky around that time, as well. I do think my love for reading classics helped with my vocabulary and spelling. I became very familiar with my dictionary as a kid!
