Oha~ Minna-san!!
Today’s post will be the Japanese words for vegetables!
Hajimemasho! (Let’s begin!)
English | Japanese |
---|---|
Vegetables | Yasai |
Broccoli | Burokkori |
Brussels Sprouts | Soramame |
Cabbage | Kyabetsu |
Carrots | Ninjin |
Celery | Serori |
Corn | Toomorokoshi |
Cucumber | Kyuuri |
Eggplant | Nasu |
Lettuce | Retasu |
Mushroom | Masshuruumu |
Onion | Tamanegi |
Snow Peas | Sayaendoo |
Spinach | Horensoo |
Squash | Kobocha |
Turnip | Kabu |
Zucchini | Zuukini |
Certain ones are easy don’t you think? Zuukini sounds the same in Japanese as it does in English. So does Broccoli! I love Burokkori but only like Zuukini in bread!
Cool. Another list of words to show my kids. I am sure I’m going to mispronounce the crap out of them, but I’ll try my best 🙂
The Japanese language has always fascinated me, but it seems so difficult, especially with a different alphabet! You make it much less intimidating. I always thought it was soooo different, but then reading your recent posts, I have been surprised at how many words DO sound similar (like zucchini and broccoli) like you pointed out this time.

Great list of words! We have a joke here in Ecuador because my autistic little brother used to shout: Suu kiinni, which is shut up, when he got angry at someone. Everyone thought that he was saying zucchini, until they finally asked. Now we call zucchini, suu kiinni. And I am delighted to notice that in Japanese it’s even closer. So, now you know. Zucchini really means shut up 😉
Very interesting as always. I can’t believe how close the words are to the phonetically sounding English words! Very cool!

I noticed that the word for carrot is very similar to ninja. I wonder if that’s because ninjas are strong and quick and carrots will make you strong? Probably not, but I loved the similarity! Great words, thanks!

Ah, now these are quite hard to memorize but I love Burokkori, Masshuruumu & Zuukini the most! Just wondering, how did it take you to learn the Japanese language? 🙂
This was a lot of fun. As I was doing it my husband was laughing because he had no idea what was happening. I will have to show my 7 year old tomorrow and see what he thinks. Thanks for sharing:)
How interesting! Some of those seem pretty tough. Burokkori and Zuukini are my favorite words from the list, and I think I’ve already for them memorized! Thanks for sharing!

Arigato gozaimasu~! for some reason “ninjin” was always one of my favorite Japanese words, haha. And it’s interesting, for certain historical reasons a lot of older Koreans still use certain Japanese words for certain things, like ‘tamanegi” for onion. Cheers!
