I was fortunate enough to recieve a box of each of the three flavors of Outburst Energy Bites in order to test and review. These convenient little bites are low in calories, enchanced with caffeine, contain Vitamin’s B-6 and B-12 as well as Taurine, an amino acid commonly found in energy drinks that has been shown to improve mental and athletic performance. These are perfect for when I don’t have the time to make a cup of coffee (okay, when I don’t have the time to put everything into the blender, and then drink my homemade Mocha Frappucino) and need an extra boost to get me through some of the time. Between the four kids, school, insomnia, general fatigue, and stress, I can get worn down extremely easily! These taste good, with a crunch like a chocolate coated candy, yet they give you energy quickly without the hassle of a liquid, in a portable package!
There are 3 servings (a serving is equal to 4 bites) per box of these bites, and a total of three flavors. Chocolate Mint, Chocolate, and Chocolate Peanut. I ended up liking two of the flavors more than the other, though would even use the less prefered one in a pinch when if I needed the boost and didn’t have the others on hand.
The chocolate bites were the first of the ones I tried, now I cannot really stand the unusual texture of most energy shots as they seem to be funky and pretty much can gag me. I also cannot find my favorite energy drink (which is an energy soda) locally anymore, so what does one do in such a situation? They look for different things that may help! This is where these energy bites REALLY save me. I have a hard time sleeping and some days I am still exhausted, or just getting re-exhausted by the time I have dance class. I don’t know about you, but attempting to do a 50 minute dance class while being so tired you’d rather do nothing more than fall over on the couch and sleep for two hours is not something I’d suggest forcing yourself to cope with unless you absolutely HAVE to.
Anyway, I used a half serving (2 bites) of energy bites the first time I felt like I REALLY needed to, which just so happened to be the day after getting the product. Thankfully, I had about 20 minutes before class and was no longer dead on my feet by the time I had to be ready to attempt my short, chubby self to dance around the dance floor as if I knew what I was doing (which I don’t) in learning the Virginia Reel, which is exhausting to learn by the way. Really, it’s been YEARS since I’ve been required to be so hoppy and energetic.
The next time I tried these I had a full dose of the chocolate, I was exhausted, and needed the energy to stay up after the kids had gone to bed in order to actually sit here and focus on a full chapter of my Sociology 220 book (this book can, and indeed has put me to sleep sorry to say!), needless to say I had the burst of energy I needed to not fall out with my book in hands (which causes cramping I’d like to note :P), and read the chapter entirely. Which is good, because I was behind!
Aussie (my fiance) actually tried the Chocolate Peanut type of bites before I did, I was surpised at how much these looked like yellow Peanut M&M’s! Actually they tasted just about as good too, though of course with a bit of a more muted chocolate taste, and a ‘vitaminy’ taste to them in comparison to the candy counterpart. Still, he had been falling asleep at his seat and was reenergized in no time! These helped with his “jet-lag” so-to-speak, from converting being in Australia to being all the way here in Northern Idaho. As you can imagine, such a journey is exhausting, more so when it’s difficult to sleep when the person in the seat next to you does annoying things that keep you awake. Needless to say the poor guy was tired that day, but couldn’t just go to sleep at 6PM, or he’d never adapt to being here at home. 😉
I too enjoyed the taste and overall texture of the Chocolate Peanut bites more than I had anticipated. Originally, I thought they were a chocolate peanut-butter type bite instead of a chocolate with a peanut inside. Yum! These ones have got to be my favorite of the flavors! Seconded by the chocolate, with the mint coming in last. Which is interesting, as I anticipated liking the mint more than the ‘peanut’ originally, and was pleasantly surprised to find out otherwise.
The mint ones are pretty in color though, then again who could pass up a green candy? I was already feeling a bit tired, grouchy, and all that when I tried the mint. Though they weren’t unpleasant, I just didn’t enjoy their flavor as much as the peanut (I do like nuts) and the plain chocolate. Still, they’re good for those who like mint, and likely me when I am not in one of those ‘not really minty’ moods. 😉
The boxes of these are super handy, they fit in my purse, in my pants pocket, my jacket pocket, or in the little side console of my van. Meaning if I ever need a quick pick me up, I can just pop 2-4 bites in my mouth, chomp them down quickly, without the awful taste and texture of any energy drink or shot I’ve tried in the past! I think these are perfect for fellow college students, busy workers, busy moms, or just anyone on the go who could use something for energy but doesn’t want to be/cannot down energy shots and/or who doesn’t like the taste of coffee.
The calories are very few per bite, about 12 or so per bite, but depending on flavor there may be more or less. Which means that this has less calories than coffee too. I don’t notice any significant crash in contrast to what you may get off of coffee either, so have no real downsides here aside from the not 100% loving the minty flavor of the mint ones. However I’ve also been not feeling so great lately and haven’t really enjoyed anything minty the past couple of weeks, so it’s likely just me and not the bites at this point.
Bottom line? I’d buy and use all three of these flavors, but I would absolutely pick the Chocolate Peanut first, the original Chocolate second, and the Chocolate Mint as a third. Unless once I’m feeling better (thank you children for this sinus cold/pressure evil) I find that I prefer the mint over the plain chocolate. In which case, oh.. who cares? I like these, and while they wont ALWAYS replace my Mocha Frappucino (I do so love the taste of coffee, and if they made a Mocha flavor of these, I’d LOVE to try them! ;), I would use them in the future!
