It’s good to know the names of foods and things if you are ordering in a different language, or impress the waiter/ess at the Japanese restaurant you may like to go to. So I’ve complied a list here of names of some foods in Japanese!
Now… this wont be a complete list, as that would take awhile, but this is part one! So… Look forward to more down the line!
This time, we’ll do some meats and seafoods!
English | Japanese |
---|---|
Beef | Gyuuniku |
Chicken | Toriniku |
Lamb | Ramu |
Pork | Butaniku |
Rib | Bara |
Rye | Rai |
Cod | Tara |
Code Roe | Tarako |
Crab | Kani |
Artificial Crab | Kanikama |
Eel | Unagii |
Halibut | Hirame |
Octopus | Tako |
Oyster | Kaki |
Shrimp/Prawns | Ebi |
Rainbow Trout | Nijimasu |
Salmon | Sake |
Trout | Ayu |
Some of these are surprising, like salmon – sake. I thought that was the drink. And Rye – Rai is similar in sound. Love Japanese food. Sashimi is my favorite.

Is she in first year Japanese?
My husband spent 3 weeks in Japan in the military and said he lived on rice for the entire time. He hates seafood and he was unable to find chicken or beef anywhere. Poor guy.
Oh wow! How long ago was that?
This is good to know:) Sushi is one of my favorite food ever. But today I’m gonna eat thai food:)

I thought sake was a drink, but nonetheless you made me want to get sushi for lunch! I am actually part Japanese and I didn’t know some of these words!

i am not a sushi fan, but my son loves it..
Is it all sushi you don’t like? Or just the raw types?
What is an artificial crab? Interesting post, I love new languages and it would be really interesting to learn some Japanese.

Artificial crab is Surimi. Surimi is made up from white fish like Alaskan pollock. It is about 76 percent water and 15 percent fish protein. It’s been made and used in Japan for a long time, and got popular in the US in the 80s!
My daughter loves Japanese food especially Sushi.. She knows some of the words as she goes to the Japanese Restaurant more often 🙂
Good to learn new language
Great list! Now I have a small craving for some sushi! Yum 🙂

I found it interesting that Sake is Salmon. I thought it was a drink.
I knew one or two (like crab) but salmon really surprised me! I thought Sake only referred to the rice wine!

This is a great list!! I love sushi and always feel stupid when you go to the real sushi restaurants and they only list the Japanese name. This will help out a lot

I really enjoy sushi, its a treat for my husband and I, especially when we aren’t in landlocked Colorado.
I just can’t bring myself to eat sushi (raw fish. ew!). However, I did learn a lot of neat new words from this post. Now I can use my new knowledge to make myself sound smart! yay!

Not all sushi is raw fish, in fact some of my favorite are completely cooked! 😀
I’ve heard a few of these in passing, but now I know what they mean. This is cool.

This was funny to read but let me tell you that three such Japanese names are names of people in India. Lamb – Ramu, Ramu is a popular name of house hold helping boys in north india
Rye – Rai, Rai is a family name
Cod – Tara, Tara means star in sky, popular girl name
I’ve always wanted to learn Japanese. I would probably butcher the pronunciation of many of these.

Love to have found this on your site! Thanks for sharing. Some restaurants state salmon as shake instead of sake, sha-ke. Maybe that’s how they differentiate it from the drinking sake. And I thought Ayu was sweetfish? Unless sweetfish is a trout? I’m not sure but they always looked rather small.
